These programs are designed for universities and faculty seeking academically rigorous international experiences that move beyond a single location while maintaining clear oversight, learning objectives, and assessment standards.

Program Model and Academic Design

Summit’s study abroad programs are defined by a simple but demanding premise. They are multi-city, faculty-led experiences that combine academic credit with structured exploration of business, culture, and society. Rather than treating travel as an add-on, Summit integrates movement between cities directly into the academic design.

Programs typically begin with a core academic phase on campus. This period establishes shared frameworks, theoretical foundations, and cohort cohesion. Faculty introduce key concepts, methods, and debates that students will carry with them as the program moves beyond the classroom. From there, the program transitions into guided academic travel across multiple cities, each selected for its relevance to the course themes.

Faculty Leadership and Academic Integration

Faculty leadership is central throughout. Professors do not simply teach at the start and step away during travel. They actively guide the academic journey, facilitating daily or regular debriefs, leading discussions tied to site visits, and helping students connect lived experiences to course material. Company visits, institutional briefings, and cultural encounters are not treated as tourism. They function as case material, prompts for analysis, and inputs into graded academic work.

This structure supports a range of disciplines, particularly business, economics, social sciences, and interdisciplinary European or global studies. Courses are designed to meet home-university standards, with clear syllabi, assessments, and learning objectives. At the same time, they leverage the comparative advantage of being abroad. Students examine how ideas play out differently across national and cultural contexts, and how local institutions, markets, and histories shape decision-making.

Another defining feature of Summit programs is the structured, faculty-led nature of academic travel. Students move between cities as a cohort, with professors guiding the experience throughout. Travel days, site visits, and local engagement are treated as extensions of the classroom rather than breaks from it. This approach allows faculty to maintain academic continuity, ensure student support, and integrate each location directly into course discussions, assignments, and assessments.

Alignment with University Programs

For universities and study abroad offices, Summit programs are designed to complement existing curricula rather than compete with them. They can be positioned as credit-bearing electives, discipline-specific offerings, or thematic programs that cut across departments. Long-term partnerships with universities and local faculty ensure academic credibility and continuity, while allowing flexibility in course design and itineraries.

At its core, Summit’s model reflects a belief that global learning is most powerful when students are asked to think, move, and reflect at the same time. By combining faculty-led instruction, multi-city travel, and real-world engagement, Summit Global Education offers a study abroad format aligned with how business, culture, and society actually intersect in the world students are preparing to enter.

Maybe your ideal back-end developer is in Poland, your UX designer is in Brazil, and your marketing wizard is in Vietnam. In the early stages, it’s not unusual for a five-person team to span five time zones and speak five first languages.

This is the reality of innovation today — talent is global. And if you want to hire the best, you can’t limit yourself to the people in your own zip code.

Here’s the good news: diverse teams are often more innovative. The research is clear — groups with a mix of cultural backgrounds, languages, and worldviews tend to generate more creative solutions, spot blind spots faster, and adapt to change better.

Here’s the bad news: diversity doesn’t automatically work in your favor. Without the right skills in place, those same differences can slow things down. Communication styles clash. Meetings turn into confusion. Assumptions go unspoken — or worse, go unnoticed — until a deadline is missed or a project stalls.

For a big corporation with deep pockets, these inefficiencies are annoying but survivable. For a small startup racing against the clock (and the burn rate), they can be fatal.

When we talk about “startup skills,” we tend to focus on things like coding speed, product-market fit, fundraising, or marketing chops. But for teams that operate across borders, one of the most important skills is cross-cultural fluency — the ability to understand, adapt to, and bridge differences in how people think, work, and communicate.

Cross-cultural fluency isn’t about memorizing etiquette rules or learning how to say “hello” in 20 languages. It’s about understanding the deeper frameworks that shape how people make decisions, share ideas, and solve problems. It’s about recognizing that “direct feedback” means one thing in Berlin and something very different in Tokyo. It’s about knowing when silence signals agreement and when it means trouble.

If you’re a founder, you already know this. But here’s the bigger picture: this isn’t just a startup problem. It’s a future workforce problem.

The students sitting in university lecture halls today are the ones who will be joining — and leading — global teams tomorrow. Some will join scrappy startups. Others will work in multinational giants. Many will move between both worlds. If they leave school without the ability to work effectively across cultures, they’ll be at a disadvantage.

And so will the companies that hire them.

Small startups live or die by the quality of their teams. When you’re competing for top talent, you don’t just hire the best person in your city — you hire the best person you can find, period. That often means recruiting across borders and building teams made up of people from very different cultural backgrounds.

This is how some of the most innovative teams are born. Not because they share a single way of thinking, but because they don’t. Each person brings a unique perspective shaped by different experiences, education systems, and problem-solving traditions. Put those perspectives in the same room, and you have a much richer pool of ideas to draw from.

That’s why immersive, multicultural learning environments matter. When students work on diverse teams during their education, they get to experiment with these skills, make mistakes in low-risk settings, and learn what it takes to make diversity a strength.

For small startups, the need is urgent. The next time a founder is building a global team to ship a product or launch a new feature, they’ll be looking for people who don’t just tolerate difference — they know how to turn it into a competitive advantage.

But amid the buzz, some quietly ask: Is Europe still relevant for today’s global business students?

The answer is a resounding yes—perhaps now more than ever.

Europe remains one of the richest environments in the world for teaching international strategy, not in spite of its complexity, but because of it. For students learning to navigate layered systems, manage across cultures, and adapt to shifting rules of the game, Europe is not just a destination. It’s a classroom built on contradiction, collaboration, and centuries of negotiation.

Teaching global strategy through the lens of Europe forces students to grapple with the reality that economic integration doesn’t always mean simplicity. On the contrary, doing business across the EU means understanding overlapping layers of national and supranational law, regional identity, local regulation, and EU-wide policy frameworks. The eurozone adds another layer still: a shared currency without a shared fiscal policy. It’s an economic puzzle that no textbook can flatten into neat theories.

From a teaching standpoint, this is gold.

Where else can find this much complexity is such a tight space? By studying in Europe, you get exposure to a great mixture of ideas, cultures and business practices. You trace in real time how companies respond to GDPR, or how labor law, antitrust enforcement, and cross-border logistics all collide within a supposedly unified market? Students don’t just learn theory here. They see theory meet friction.

Because the world doesn’t come with a user manual.

Whatever path you’re on—business, engineering, international relations, the arts—you’re going to have to navigate uncertainty, cross cultures, and make decisions without perfect information. That’s the reality of the world ahead. It’s messy. It’s fast. And it won’t wait for you to feel ready.

So you have a choice. You can stay in the classroom and talk about how the world works—or you can go out into it and start figuring things out for yourself.

Summit is for people who choose the second path. You’ll travel through Europe or Latin America, not as a tourist, but as a learner—meeting with founders, policy thinkers, local innovators, and global teams. You’ll see how culture shapes collaboration, how ideas get off the ground (or don’t), and how real people wrestle with complex problems every day.

It’s not always tidy. That’s the point. You’ll come back with more questions—but also more perspective, more confidence, and a clearer sense of how you want to engage with the world.

The challenge is, most of us live on autopilot. We stop noticing how things work because we’re so used to them. We’re inside the system, so we no longer see it.

But when you’re dropped into a new country, everything’s different — the way people shop, eat, ride the bus, pay bills, hang out. Suddenly your brain starts asking: “Why is it like this?” That’s not just culture shock — that’s your innovation radar turning on. When you’ve seen how things can work differently, you start spotting all the invisible friction back home. And that’s where good ideas begin.

International experience disrupts your mental autopilot — and that’s exactly what makes it so powerful.

Cognitive science shows that real insight doesn’t come just from deep concentration. As Barbara Oakley explains in A Mind for Numbers, we learn best when we alternate between two modes: focused thinking (structured, deliberate) and diffuse thinking (relaxed, exploratory). It’s in this back-and-forth that new ideas form.

Travel naturally pushes us into diffuse mode. You’re constantly absorbing new inputs — navigating unfamiliar streets, noticing how locals queue at cafés, or figuring out how to pay for a metro ride with no instructions. Your brain starts connecting dots you didn’t even know were there. That’s the spark of creativity.

But here’s the key: without reflection, that spark can fade. To turn raw experience into real insight, you need both immersion and interpretation. It’s not just about exposure — it’s about making sense of what you’ve seen.

That’s why your best idea might not come from a lecture — but from noticing how things work differently in Seoul, then stepping back to ask why.

Innovative Skills You Learn Abroad

College does a great job of teaching you how to analyze texts, understand theories, and navigate group work. But the skills that really set people apart — the ones employers, founders, and creative leaders talk about — often come from outside the classroom. Things like making decisions with limited information. Adapting under pressure. Navigating unfamiliar systems without a manual.

These are the kinds of meta-skills you develop when you live and learn abroad. You get better at handling ambiguity. You learn to adjust your approach when things don’t go to plan. You build confidence in uncertain situations — and that carries over into every part of life: work, relationships, travel, creative projects, even your next big idea.

Living Abroad Builds Your Confidence (the Real Kind)

Confidence isn’t about speaking up more in class — it’s about knowing that when things go wrong, you can handle them. And few experiences build that kind of resilience faster than living abroad. You’ll screw up. You’ll miss trains. You’ll say the wrong thing at the wrong time. And then… you’ll survive. Better yet, you’ll adapt. That’s when the switch flips. You start thinking: “If I figured out how to deal with that city, I can handle this job interview. I can start that project. I can move to that city.”

Once you’ve handled São Paulo or Tokyo or Cape Town, the fear of trying new things shrinks. That’s confidence — not the fake-it-til-you-make-it kind, but the earned, unshakable kind.

You Don’t Just Learn — You Start Seeing the World Like a Builder

Here’s the best part: after a few weeks of immersion, your brain doesn’t go back to normal. You start noticing more. You ask better questions. You spot weird contradictions. (Why does this place have mobile money but no trash pickup?) You see workarounds and informal systems. You develop a builder’s mindset. Every city becomes a live case study. Every street has clues. Every person is a perspective you hadn’t considered.

Travel trains you to see the world as a series of solvable problems — and that mindset sticks, long after the trip ends.

Want to Be More Creative? Get Uncomfortable

This part’s important: none of this happens if you treat travel like vacation. You have to lean into discomfort. Try the language. Ask dumb questions. Stay with a host family. Do the awkward thing. Why? Because creativity doesn’t come from comfort — it comes from contrast. It comes from mixing the familiar with the strange, the old with the new. And you only get that mix if you’re willing to be bad at things for a while. If you want the kind of creativity that feels like a superpower, this is the training ground.

You’ll See Problems Others Miss — And That’s the Whole Game

Let’s talk about startups for a second. The best ideas didn’t come from genius brainstorms — they came from noticing real problems in the wild. Airbnb happened because someone noticed that people were willing to share their homes when hotels were full. TransferWise (now Wise) started because two guys were sick of paying insane fees to send money home. These weren’t lightbulb moments — they were travel-inspired observations. What makes you a standout innovator isn’t the idea you pitch — it’s the problem you spotted before anyone else. International experience gives you more chances to spot those problems. Period.

Here’s the catch: not all travel is transformative.

You have to do it with the right mindset. Start a “problem journal” while abroad. Write down things that confuse or frustrate you. Pay attention to what people complain about. Watch how systems really work — not just what’s advertised. If something surprises you, ask why. If something feels off, dig deeper. Don’t just be a tourist. Be a detective. Every contradiction, every workaround, every hack you see abroad is a clue. It might be the seed of your next big idea — or the insight that makes your next job interview hit different.

This is about building something far more powerful than a resume line or a travel memory — it’s about sharpening how you think and expanding what you’re capable of seeing. It’s about who you become when you let yourself get lost, uncomfortable, and curious in a new place. It’s about rewiring your brain to see, think, and build in ways most people never do. You won’t just collect stamps in your passport — you’ll collect mental models, ideas, and stories that fuel your next move. You’ll build a kind of confidence and creativity that no course, no internship, no résumé bullet point can touch.

So why go abroad? Because the world’s not waiting for tourists. It’s waiting for problem-finders, builders, and innovators. And you could be one of them — if you’re brave enough to go see things differently.

Traveling through Europe can be an enriching experience, full of learning opportunities and adventures. However, managing finances wisely is crucial to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here’s a comprehensive guide to handling your money, using ATMs, and maximizing your financial resources while exploring Europe.

Preparing for Your Trip

Before you embark on your European adventure, a little preparation can go a long way. Start by notifying your bank and credit card companies about your travel plans. This precaution helps prevent your accounts from being frozen due to foreign transactions that may seem suspicious. During this conversation, also inquire about any international fees associated with your accounts. Many banks offer cards with low or no foreign transaction fees, which can save you a lot on your trip.

Notify Banks: Inform your banks and credit card companies of your travel dates and destinations.

Check Fees: Ask about international transaction and ATM withdrawal fees.

Explore Cards: Research and consider cards with low or no foreign transaction fees.

Choosing the Right Card

Picking the right bank card is pivotal. For debit cards, seek out those from banks that are part of a global ATM network or offer reimbursements for ATM fees—Charles Schwab and HSBC are good examples. When it comes to credit cards, opt for one that does not charge foreign transaction fees. Travel-oriented credit cards not only waive these fees but often provide additional perks like favorable exchange rates and travel insurance.

Select Debit Cards: Choose debit cards from banks with global ATM networks or those that offer ATM fee reimbursements, like Charles Schwab or HSBC.

Choose Credit Cards: Opt for credit cards that waive foreign transaction fees and offer additional travel perks such as favorable exchange rates and travel insurance.

Compare Benefits: Evaluate the benefits of different cards to find the best fit for your travel needs.

Using ATMs Wisely

ATMs are commonly used in Europe and are generally easy to find in urban areas. However, when you venture into rural parts or smaller towns, like many regions in Spain, ATMs might be scarce. It’s a good practice to withdraw enough cash in advance when heading to less populated areas. Always use ATMs affiliated with well-known banks, preferably during bank opening hours for added security and assistance availability. Avoid independent ATMs from providers like Travelex or Euronet, as they often have higher fees and unfavorable exchange rates.

Plan Withdrawals: Withdraw sufficient cash in advance when heading to rural or less populated areas.

Use Bank ATMs: Always opt for ATMs affiliated with well-known banks, ideally during bank opening hours for added security and assistance.

Avoid Independent ATMs: Steer clear of ATMs operated by independent providers like Travelex or Euronet due to higher fees and less favorable exchange rates.

Managing ATM Withdrawals

To minimize fees and maximize convenience, plan your withdrawals strategically. While it might be tempting to withdraw small amounts frequently, this can lead to accumulating higher fees. Instead, opt for larger withdrawals less often, keeping in mind safety concerns about carrying cash. Remember to always perform transactions in the local currency to avoid the pitfalls of dynamic currency conversion, which can be costly due to poor exchange rates.

Strategize Withdrawals: Opt for larger withdrawals less frequently to minimize fees and consider safety when carrying cash.

Use Local Currency: Always choose to perform transactions in the local currency to avoid costly dynamic currency conversion fees.

Plan for Safety: Keep cash secure and consider your travel itinerary when deciding how much cash to carry.

Understanding Card Fees

Both Visa and MasterCard typically add a 1% international transaction fee, and banks may tack on an additional 1–3% currency conversion fee. By using a credit card that offers low international transaction fees and a debit card from a bank with low international ATM fees, you can significantly reduce your expenses.

Choose Low-Fee Cards: Opt for credit cards with low international transaction fees and debit cards with minimal ATM fees.

Understand Fee Structure: Be aware of the typical 1% international transaction fee from Visa and MasterCard, plus potential additional currency conversion fees from banks.

Review Card Agreements: Regularly review your card agreements to stay informed about any fees that could impact your international spending.

Practical Tips for Day-to-Day Transactions

When traveling, cash is still king in many small establishments, local markets, or specific countries like Spain, where small vendors may not accept credit cards. Keep a mix of small and large bills to handle different situations, such as paying for small items or avoiding issues with getting change.

Furthermore, always be vigilant with your transactions. In places like ticket booths or local eateries, always count your change. Familiarizing yourself with the local currency goes a long way in preventing being shortchanged.

Carry Mixed Bills: Keep both small and large bills to handle diverse payment needs.

Count Your Change: Always verify the amount of change you receive from transactions.

Learn the Currency: Familiarize yourself with the local currency to prevent being shortchanged.

Safety and Security

Use ATMs in secure locations and avoid standalone machines in secluded or overly touristy areas, which are more susceptible to skimming devices. Always have a backup card stored separately from your main wallet and keep digital copies of your card details securely online or with a trusted contact.

Choose Secure ATMs: Use ATMs in safe, well-monitored locations and avoid those in secluded or highly touristic areas to reduce the risk of skimming.

Store Backup Cards: Keep a backup credit or debit card in a separate location from your main wallet to ensure access to funds in case of loss or theft.

Secure Digital Copies: Maintain digital copies of your card details securely online or with a trusted contact for emergency access.

Budgeting and Cultural Awareness

Monitoring your spending is vital. Use apps or a daily ledger to keep track of your expenses, especially as you navigate different countries with varying costs of living. Understanding local monetary practices like tipping and bargaining can also enhance your travel experience and prevent misunderstandings.

Use Budgeting Apps: Track your expenses daily to manage your budget effectively.

Understand Local Customs: Learn local tipping and bargaining practices to navigate financial interactions smoothly.

Conclusion

Managing your finances while traveling in Europe doesn’t have to be daunting. By preparing in advance, choosing the right financial tools, and using smart strategies for withdrawals and payments, you can enjoy all that Europe has to offer without financial stress. Remember, the key to a successful trip lies in planning, awareness, and a bit of savvy. Safe travels and enjoy your European adventure!

Challenges to Democracy (hint: it’s all about Education!)

I recently read a really interesting article from The Economist regarding education and threats to democracy. Here are some highlights, and a link to learn more…

IN 2012 David Souter, a retired justice of the Supreme Court, argued that the greatest threat to American democracy was neither a foreign invasion nor a military coup, but ignorance about how government functions. “An ignorant people can never remain a free people,”

The World Values Survey, a global study by social scientists from over 100 countries, found that far fewer millennials object to autocracy than their elders. Only 19% of millennials in America and 36% in Europe say that if the government were incompetent or failing to do its job, a military takeover would still not be legitimate.

Just a third see civil rights as “absolutely essential” to democracy.

In America, more than a quarter dismiss the importance of free elections.

In 1995 only 16% of American youngsters thought democracy was a “bad” system; by 2011, that number had risen to almost 25%.

This is a key paragraph, looking at the USA:

“In America civic-education classes no longer cover what life is like in non-democracies. Schools used to educate their charges about life in the Soviet Union, points out Richard Kahlenberg of The Century Foundation, a think-tank, making the case for democracy by comparison. But when the cold war ended, that stopped. He thinks declining support for democratic values is a partial consequence. “It’s easy to be sceptical [about the value of democracy] when you don’t know anything different,” he says. Without context to help them appreciate the benefits and safeguards afforded by democracy, young people may be vulnerable to emotional appeals to nationalism and fiery rhetoric about seizing power from “elites”.

What should be done?

“The best civic-education classes do more than impart knowledge about how government works. They create environments in which pupils get used to the tools of democracy, such as debating controversial issues and disagreeing respectfully.
