Why Study Abroad Now?

It has never been easier to learn about another country without going there. Students can watch videos, translate languages instantly, explore cities online and ask artificial intelligence to explain unfamiliar cultures, institutions or markets.

That access is valuable. But knowing more about the world is not the same as knowing how to operate within it.

Whatever path you pursue—business, engineering, international relations, the sciences or the arts—you will encounter people whose assumptions, experiences and ways of communicating differ from your own.

The classroom provides essential ideas, evidence and frameworks for understanding how the world works. Studying abroad allows students to test those ideas against places that have their own histories, cultures and institutions.

A concept discussed in class may look different when encountered inside a business, neighborhood, museum or public institution. Moving between locations creates further questions: Why does the same idea work differently here? What changed? Which assumptions no longer hold?
